On our first trike tour, Janet enjoyed a fabulous ride down Mt Constitution on a Mango Yellow 559. The music is Oscar Peterson and Benny Carter’s Long Ago [And Far Away]

In 2017, we mixed it up a bit -riding a two wheel recumbent. On the way up, 15 year old Marc constantly reminding Dad, “C’mon old man”. The University of Warwick Big Band accompanies
In 2018, it rained ALL week. We were freezing and soaking wet on the way down (we now bring extra gloves). It was still a fabulous ride! Francois Chassagnite & Olivier Giraudo accompany with -appropriately enough- Funk in a Deep Freeze
In 2021, the ride was as perfect as the weather. Sunday afternoons in October are the absolute perfect time to visit: Summer crowds are long gone and we didn’t see 10 cars the whole climb We had 25 GoPros spread out over a dozen trikes. Charlie (“The Dude”) provides a running commentary. Where it looks like I’m going 45 miles per hour, I’m going 45 miles per hour. Paula Shocron’s trio plays the Duke Pearson’s classic Jeannine. By the way, to those who reasonably complain the video’s too long at 5 minutes and 30 seconds, I reply that I winnowed it down from 12 hours. So, they can stop watching or stop complaining. I don’t care either way.
2022, 25 of us blasted down Mt. Constitution’s 2500 foot vertical. Per usual, The Dude gets his opening commentary. We ran 32 GoPros on Time Code Sync. So, we only had 16 hours of video to down to 5 minutes and 33 seconds. Our music was two tracks from arguably the greatest Jazz Trio of all time Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb (“Inarguably” in my opinion): It’s All Right and Escapade

From our Friday Harbor lodgings, we can visit Roche Harbor, Cattle Point Lighthouse, Lime Kiln State Park. The riding on San Juan is fabulous
San Juan Island
One of the most beautiful rides imaginable! Friday Harbor to the Cattle Point Light House. We detour through the American Camp National Park down a narrow spit of land with the waters of the Haro Strait to the west and the San Juan Channel to the east! Harvest Folk & Country plays Take Me Home, Country Roads. And those road do!
This is our (sometimes) rainy ride from Roche Harbor Resort back to Friday Harbor. Other than the sharks The Dude and Dougie) going at each other, we enjoyed the Osaka Monorail’s cover of the Young-Holt Unlimited classic, Soulful Strut
Riding from Friday Harbor to Westcott Bay Oysters! We stop along the way at the Lavender Farm and climb out through Lime Kiln State Park. Ticket to Ride -naturally- from Portland’s own Mel Brown Organ Group (Mel Brown, Louis Pain, Dan Balmer and Renato Caranto)
Lopez Island
The locals call it “Slopez”. There’s great riding, but little tourist trade on Lopez. So, always safe to confirm your lunch spot is open! It’s an easy day trip on the ferry from Friday Harbor

A beautiful slow ride down Lopez’ west coastline with San Juan Island’s Cattle Point Lighthouse plainly visible across the San Juan Channel. Where in the world did we EVER find Udo Lindenberg’s cover of the Otis Redding classic (“Ich Sitz Den Ganzen Tag Bei den Docks” by it’s German title)? We have NO idea, but it kinda worked, so we went with it!

Sylvia Halpern and her famous companion trike, Myrtle the Turtle, joined us on our 2022 San Juans ride. Sylvia is a the undisputed Queen of the Recumbent Blog, so we posted her video -full of lush scenery- for all to enjoy!
Friend of the shop, Matt Galat, joined us for our 2022 Catrike Tour of the San Juans (we let him ride an AZUB!).
I’ve mentioned that the Smart Money brings electric for the 38 mile 4000 vertical foot Mt. Constitution ride. Behold, The Dumb Money: Mel, Pat Franz, Jayoe, Mechanic Paul and Charles The Dude all riding without motors. We give ourselves a couple extra hours by taking the 6 am ferry. The scenery is exactly as beautiful as it looks!

Sometimes the ferries just don’t run! Our 12:40 got canceled. These young folks had a gig scheduled on the island that evening, so they put the time to good use entertaining stranded travelers!
