Ferry Travel

Getting to the San Juans is simple! I’ve got a link to the Ferry Schedule from Anacortes, Washington. You can just leave your car at the Anacortes Ferry lot, attach your panniers (saddle bags) to to your trike’s rear rack and ride on to the ferry. Friday Harbor has tons of accommodations within a couple hundred yards of the ferry landing, so you won’t need your bags on your trike for long -though, there’s one short steep hill at the Friday Harbor terminal.
But, if your car is joining you on the ferry ride, it’s best to set up a Washington State Ferries account and get a reservation to ensure yourself a space on the boat. By the way, reservations are free -only no-shows pay a fee. Also, once you have an account, you can pre-pay for your tickets if you have a standard-sized vehicle (which saves some time at check in!).
Pro tip: The –ahem- food offerings at the Anacortes terminal and on the ferries are abysmal. It’s never a bad idea to have a picnic lunch packed. Maybe even a surreptitious bottle of decent wine, as needed.
Also, there are some nice hiking trails around the ferry terminal. So, if you get there early and you’ve got some time to kill….well, there’s always a short hike!
Once on the ferry, the ride to Friday Harbor is spectacular. If you park yourself outside on the deck, you may even see a whale!
